As far as the different spellings of the name goes Olav said a lot of it is based on different dialects or language changes over the years. However the distinct change from Solen "the sun" to Solem was because Swedes were making fun of the name. The nature of the kidding was that they would sing an old Scandinavia folk song which contained the lyrics "here comes the sun" or something of that nature. In order to prevent further taunting the name was changed. (Nathan Solem, January 2004)

In his burial record, his surname is listed as Solem. The residence and birthplace are Solen. In this record his occupation is listed as married pensioner on own estate or farm.
