The Rev. Dr. Charles H. Schmitz, 91, of 4810 Reval Court, Liverpool, died Thursday at his home after a long illness.

The Rev. Schmitz was a retired Baptist clergyman. He was ordained on April 15, 1934, and went on to serve Baptist churches in Nebraska and in Penfield, N.Y. He was pastor from 1942 to 1951 of Calvary Baptist Church in Syracuse and Baptist chaplain at Syracuse University from 1944 to 1951.

The Rev. Schmitz was chairman of the Radio and Television Committee for the American Baptist Convention from 1949 to 1951. He was director of broadcast training for the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A.'s Broadcasting and Film Commission from 1951 to 1961. He also was director of endowment development for the New York State Council of Churches from 1962 to 1975.

The Rev. Schmitz was named pastor emeritus in 1982 of the United Baptist Church of Syracuse, formerly Calvary Baptist Church.

For several years, he had a devotional program on WSYR with Robert Deacon Doubleday and Alan Milair. He was the author of two books, "Windows Toward God" and "Security from Above."

The Rev. Schmitz was born in Jersey City, N.J. He was a graduate of the University of Nebraska, Colgate Rochester Divinity School and Butler University, where he received a doctor of divinity degree in 1957. He also had attended Crozer Theological Seminary, Presbyterian Theological Seminary at Omaha, University of Chicago Religious Workshop and Syracuse University.

Surviving are his wife, Gladys; two daughters, Constance Boe of Roanoke, Va., and Gloria Roberts of Cicero; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services are 11 a.m. Monday in the United Baptist Church, with his three grandchildren and the Rev. Kenneth Roadarmel officiating. Burial is in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Calling hours are 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Greenleaf Funeral Home, 503 W. Onondaga St.
