WINSTON-SALEM -- Pauline Mills Neill, 83, of Winston-Salem, NC, died on December 12, 2005 after a brief illness.
Born Flora Pauline Milholland on May 8,1922, Polly was the daughter of Carl and Ina Johnston Milholland and grew up in Stony Point, NC. The middle child of seven, she was the 1940 class president of Stony Point High School and was crowned Miss Stony Point. In 1944, she married Clyde Henry Mills of Mooresville, NC, an Army sergeant. Following World War II the couple settled in Mooresville and raised two sons. Polly enjoyed a fifty-year career as a hairdresser and was owner of Polly's Beauty Shop. Clyde died in 1982; and in 1987, Polly married Jay Flate Neill of the Shepherds community. She was a faithful member of Central Methodist Church for many years then joined her new husband in attending Centre Presbyterian Church. Jay died in 2001; and in 2003,Polly moved to the Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem.
Polly is survived by sons, Bill Mills (Angeline) of Raleigh, and Bob Mills (Cathy)of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are their children, Taylor Mills (Betsy), Lou Ellen Mills, Robbie Mills, and Mary Mills, and Rebecca Mills; a great-grandchild. Her stepsons are Jerry Neill (Diane) and Paul Neill (Lynn) of Shepherds. Their children include Wayne Neill (Tonya), Chris Neill (Ellen), Teresa Neill Naylor (Dave), Adam Neill, Andy Neill (Stefanie), Luke Neill and Lynsey Neill. Also surviving are three Neill great-grandchildren, Kody, Katie,and Allison. Other survivors include sisters, Jean Rufty, Mary Lee Dodge (Wesley), Jackie Sherrill, Betty Lackey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family expresses its deep appreciation to Polly's many friends among the residents, staff, and caregivers at Brookridge who gave her their love, encouragement, and kindness.
The family will receive friends at the Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville on Wednesday, December 14 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Following a private burial service on Thursday morning, a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Centre Presbyterian Church in Mount Mourne.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Chaplain's Fund of Brookridge Retirement Community, c/o Maurice Griggs, 1199 Hayes Forest Dr., Winston-Salem, NC 27106; or to Centre Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 100, Mt. Mourne, NC 27123.
"So I'll cherish the old rugged cross/ Till my trophies at last I lay down/ I will cling to the old rugged cross/ And exchange it some day for a crown."
