Floyd Berglund Is Freed By Americans
Larned Soldier Was Taken Prisoner By Germans Feb. 17, 1943
Pfc. Floyd Berglund, son of Mr. and Mrs. Antone Berglund, Rte. R. Has been liberated after two years captivity as a prisoner of the Germans.
Mr. and Mrs. Berglund received a letter from their son Tuesday, in which he stated he is somewhere in northern France, having been liberated by American troops. It is believed he was in camp in southern Germany, where he had been working as a farm laborer.
The 25-year-old soldier reported he is well but that he has lost 50 pounds since he was taken prisoner at Kasserine Pass in Tunisia, Feb. 17, 1943. His parents said he weighed about 190 pounds when he entered armed service Oct. 15, 1941.
Berglund was one of many Americans taken in a surprise counter attack by Germans under Marshal Rommel when the Allied forces suffered a serious setback in the African campaign. He was with an army engineer's unit.
The first Pawnee County servicemen taken prisoner by the Germans, Pfc. Berglund is the fourth soldier from this county liberated by American troops he told his parents. He expects to be sent home in the near future.
