A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster September 12, 1861, and mustered into federal service there September 24 as a private with Co. C, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer February 9, 1864, at Chattanooga, Tennessee, re-mustered there February 12, promoted to corporal May 4, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company July 12, 1865.
He married Anna Margaret Linville June 21, 1866, in Gap, Lancaster County, and fathered Hoover Winfield (b. 10/20/74), Frazer W. (b. 10/25/77 - his death certificate identifies him as "W. C. McLaughlin"), and Newton F. (b. 06/19/81). Cause of his death is listed as "pneumonia" with "valvular mitral Bright's disease (a cryptic explanation that possibly means both heart and kidney disease) a contributing factor.

Isaac McLaughlin, of Gap, died Thursday morning from infirmities due to old age. He was 72 years old. He lived in Gap for many years, where he was a trackwalker in the employ of the P. R. R. Company. For the past two years he was a member of the Relief Association. He was also a Civil War veteran. The deceased is survived by his wife and the following children: Charles, of Harrisburg; Wesley, of Enola; Newton, of Gap, and Edward, of Youngstown, O. One sister, Mrs. Annie Trout, of Gap, also survives. The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon in the Bellevue Presbyterian Church at 2 o'clock with interment in the adjoining cemetery.
