U.S. Congressman, Judge. Elected as a Whig to represent Ohio's 17th District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1837 to 1839. A native of Newburyport, Massachusetts, his family moved to Ohio when he was a child. Coffin studied law and became an attorney in New Lisbon, Ohio. He also served as Clerk of Courts of Columbiana County. He was elected to Congress in 1837 to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of Andrew Loomis. He declined to become a candidate in 1838, resumed his law profession, and became a leading member of the bar. Coffin was also President of the Columbiana Bank of New Lisbon. He continued to practice law after moving to Cincinnati in 1842 and became Judge of the Superior Court from 1845 to 1852. In 1861, he was appointed as a state court judge and served until 1863. He died in Cincinnati in 1880 when he was 74 years old.
