BIOGRAPHY / OBITUARY
--------------------

Dorothy R. Parsons, 88, a former longtime Kent resident and prominent teacher, died Sunday at the Copeland Oaks Methodist Church Home in Sebring, Ohio, where she had been living since 1975.

She was the graddaughter of T.G. Parsons, founder of the Parsons Lumber Co., in 1866, formerly Kent's oldest business in 1969 under the management of original family owners. She was the oldest daughter of Edward S. and Jennie (Wolcott) Parsons. She was born in Kent June 19, 1892, and spent most of her life here. Her home was at 621 Park Avenue.

A 1914 graduate of Lake Erie College for Women, she earned a master's degree in French from Case Western Reserve University. Later, she furthered her studies at the Sorbonne, the arts college of the University of Paris.
Miss Parsons taught French and English for 40 years at Theodore Roosevelt High School. She also served as assistant principal there and taught at Kent State University. She retired in June 1959.

Always active in the Congregational Church of Kent, Miss Parsons wrote a history of the church covering the 50 years following the Civil War, up to World War I. She also wrote the second 50 years of church history of the former Congregational Church, now the United Church of Christ.
A woman of many and varied interests, she was a talented pianist and accomplished genealogist. Traveling was another hobby and it prompted her to fly to the southern tip of south America and 3,000 miles across Brazil, make several trips to Europe, around the world, trips to Hawaii and the Caribbean, as well as the United States, Canada and Alaska.

Miss Parsons was a member of Coterie II, Delta Gamma Sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma, Teachers' Honorary Daughters of American Colonists and Descendants of the Mayflower Society.

She is survived by serveral nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Standing Rock Cemetery with the Rev. Allen Myrick officiating. There will be no calling hours. Memorials may be made to the Kelso Memorial House Association in Brimfield or to the Hudson Historical House in Hudson. Arrangements are being handled by S.C. Bisler and sons Funeral Home.
