Born in the Town of Leyden, August 15,1920, Mr. Abel was a son of the late Fred G. and Satie Davis Abel. He attended Boonville High School and for a time was employed on a Sears Oil Co. barge.
In August 1943, he enlisted in the Seabees as a carpenter's mate third class. After being discharged, he was employed by Garlock Lumber Co. of Boonville, Gleasman's Park side Supply Co. and the Town of Boonville. For 33 years, Mr. Abel was an ironworker for Central Steel Erecting Co. before retiring in August, 1962.
He married Helen Schleicher August 4,1945, in a ceremony at the Davis Homestead at Barretts Corners in the Town of Leyden where his parents were married in 1918.
A member of the Talcottville Methodist Church, Mr. Abel was also a member and past commander of Charles J. Love Post American Legion, the Boonville Lodge of Elks and Ironworkers Union #440. He was also an honorary member of the Boonville Fire Department.
Besides his wife, Mr. Abel is survived by three daughters, Mrs. David (Marlene) Pritchard, Boonville, Mrs. Greg (Dora Jean) Dirda, Holland Patent, and Mrs. Ronald (Patti) Storm, Las Vegas, Nev.; one son, Franklin Albert Abel, Sr., Boonville; seven grandchildren, David Pritchard, Jr., William Albert Pritchard, Renee Pritchard and Jamie Pritchard, all of Boonville; Heather White and Joshua Storm, of Las Vegas, and Franklin Albert Abel, Jr., of Utica. He was anticipating the birth of his great grandchild next month.
He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Betty Powers, of Greene, and Mrs. Doris Haight of Sunnymead, Calif., one brother, Gordon Abel, Kirkville; two cousins, Donald Abbuhl and Shirley Augustine, both of Rome; several nieces and nephews. A brother, Franklin, died in 1949, and another brother, Frederick, died in 1973.
