Coeur d'Alene Press:
-Lexena Margaret Cofield, of Coeur d'Alene, went to meet her Heavenly Father on Dec. 20, 2008. Her family and friends take comfort in knowing, in no uncertain terms, that Jesus Christ was her personal Lord and Savior. We are celebrating her first Christmas in Heaven. Lex was born in Brightwood, Alberta, Oct. 18, 1930, to Ella (Austen) and Donald MacRae. She was the fourth child of seven children. She had four brothers -- Richard, Sandy, Kenneth and Donald, and two sisters -- Jean and Annabelle. They were raised on the family farm where Lex enjoyed riding horses and playing family games. Education was always a top priority in Lex's family and she earned her degree as a Registered Nurse (RN) from the Misercordia Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. After graduation as an RN, she accepted a nursing position in Wainwright, a town in central Alberta. It was there that she met the love of her life, Gordon Roy Cofield. They were married at her parent's farm in Brightwood on June 4, 1954. A couple of years later, they moved from Canada (to Coeur d'Alene), where Gordon and his brother, Glenn, established Cofield Bros., Inc. and Lex worked at Holy Family Hospital. Gordon and Lex were blessed with three children: Wayne, Debbie and Darla. Lex devoted the next several years to raising their children, which she often referred to as one of the highest callings in her life. Their home was a wonderful place for children to live, grow and experience life. Priorities included church activities, sports, music and traveling to Canada and Hawaii. When the kids were older, Lex went back to nursing at Kootenai Medical Center (KMC), where she was a surgical recovery nurse for 18 years. In troubling times, Lexena was a calming influence and her exceptional empathy and kindness helped many overcome their challenges. In her early 30s, Lex was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). It was a shock, but Lex made a conscious decision not to let this disease control her life. She continued to play golf, bowl, work and stay active with her family. One of the things most often admired about Lex was her ability to cope with adversity and never complain. This is an attribute her children strive to incorporate into their lives. Lex took great pleasure in seeing and caring for her four grandchildren, Drake, Kendra, Brooke and MaKenna. Every time one of them walked into the room, her eyes lit up and a smile came across her face. She truly loved every aspect of being a grandmother. In 2004, Gordon and Lex celebrated 50 years of sharing their lives together. Having a loving and committed relationship was a high priority for both of them. Their relationship was an example of dedication, supoort and conditional love for one another. Their home was always a safe haven for their children and friends, where Lex was well known for having her famous chocolate chip cookies on hand. Lex will be forever missed by her loving husband, Gordon, her children, grandchildren, family and many friends. She had a positive influence on so many people during her stay on Earth. She will be forever remembered for how she touched others with her kind words and her wonderful sense of humor. She made the world a better place and she has gone to join her parents, Ella and Don; brothers, Don and Sandy; and sister-in-laws, Marjorie and Bernice. Lex, you will be in our thoughts and prayers and we know you will be watching over us until we meet again in the home of our Lord.
-Visitation will be held from noon-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at ENGLISH FUNERAL CHAPEL, Coeur d'Alene. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Mountain Lakes Bible Church at 2214 North Seventh St., Coeur d'Alene. Reception to follow. If desired, please send a donation in Lex's name to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Inland Northwest Chapter at 818 East Sharp, Spokane, WA 99202.
