Eldest son of John F. Bornheimer and Caroline Landgraf, John Ernst wasn't even two years old when his father enlisted in the 46th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.
Not long after his father returned, the family gave up farming and moved into Milwaukee, taking up residence on East Water Street.
John Ernst became a barber, and also a cigar maker, running 'Bornheimer's Tobacco' on the same street.
He married a woman named 'Mary' who, according to census records, was born in Michigan, but not much else about her has been discovered.
Together, they had a son, Ambrose, and together with Ambrose's wife they rest together in eternal peace.
