U.S. Congressman. He attended Miami University (1858-59) and studied law in Sidney, Ohio. With the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, he enlisted in the Union Army, served as a Major of the 15th Ohio Infantry and was brevetted a Brigadier General for his service. After the war, he was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives in 1865, Ohio Secretary of State, 1866 and the U.S. Consul at Nuremberg, Bavaria, (1867-69). In 1879, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1887. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he served as a mail contract agent for Erie Railway Company. Retiring from public service, he engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death.
