Civil War: Company D and F, 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry

Niram Willard Beeman was the son of Homer Beeman (1803, CT – 1853, PA) and Elizabeth Williams (1806, NY – 1848, PA). After his mother's death in 1848, his father married Agnes Seidler (1808, PA), the widow of Jonathan Seidler (1795, PA – 1846, PA). Niram was still a resident of Mead Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, when he enlisted as a private September 3, 1861. He was mustered into Company F, 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry. His younger brother John joined him in 1864. They both were later transferred to Company D. The Beeman brothers were mustered out at Washington, D. C., June 28, 1865. After the war Niram returned to Pennsylvania where he married Margaret "Maggie" A. Fleming in 1871. Maggie was born in Pennsylvania in December 1847. He was still living in Pennsylvania when he filed for a Civil War veteran's pension November 4, 1881, and received application No. 432,793 and certificate No. 961,542. Niram relocated to Santa Paula, Ventura County, California, about 1884, where he was employed for about 7 years as a petroleum engineer. It was there he registered to vote October 2, 1890. Niram was working as a petroleum engineer in Los Angeles by 1892 and residing at 454 S. Main Street. Niram had moved into a newly constructed house at 223 E. 27th Street when he registered to vote June 4, 1896. At the time he was described as being 5' 7" tall with a dark complexion, gray eyes, and dark hair. Niram and Maggie were still living at 223 E. 27th Street in 1900, at which time Niram was retired. His wife Margaret and Nettie A. Hendee were operating an art supply, fancy goods, and children's clothing store at 310 S. Broadway; a business the two women had opened in 1892 at 323 S. Spring Street. Nettie (41 and single) and her mother, Sarah E. Hendee, were living with the Beeman's, along with Niram's brother John and his wife Eleanor. Niram and Margaret had moved to 622 S. Rampart by 1910, and the store was then at 447 S. Broadway. Margaret's business partner, Nettie, was still living with the Beeman's. After Niram died, Margaret filed for a widow's pension November 10, 1910, and received application No. 952,989 and certificate No. 723,821. Niram and Maggie never had any children. Niram is buried next to his nephew, Homer Gideon Beeman, and brother, John Williams Beeman, who served alongside him in the 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry. His older brother, Truman Oscar Beeman, was also a Civil War veteran who served in Company I, 169th Pennsylvania Infantry.
