Martha Ann Davis was the daughter of James L.Davis,CSA and Harriet Crawford. Her Father died in 1863 in Richmond, Va.during the Civil War while bravely fighting to defend his family and the home he loved. Martha had 2 sisters, Anna and Ardelia and 3 brothers, Benjamin, Colquit and Randall. She first married Berrien Henderson, who was 47 years older than her. Martha had been caring for his wife, Julia Newbern, and her 10 children with Berrien. After Julia died, Martha married Berrien to continue caring for his 10 children and him. She had 4 children with Berrien, Addie Purdonna (1872), George Moultrie (1874), Walter Cole (1876), Benjamin Joseph (1880). Berrien died in 1881 and in 1883, Martha married Cuyler Washington Byrd and they had 4 children, Everrette Lawton (1882), Leon Marion (1884), Mary Edna (1887), Ella Mae (1888). Martha was a strong woman, whose life was not an easy one. She had 8 children of her own and raised 10 others. I only wish I could have met her.
