Zelia Mertel Kirkpatrick, 92, Springfield, passed away at 4:25 am Saturday March 16, 2002 in Primrose Place. She as born Feb 7, 1910 in Wyaconda, MO, the daughter of Henry Edgar and Ona Mertel.

The family moved to Springfield shortly after her birth. She graduated in the class of 1927 from Central High School in 1934 and received her master's degree from Columbia University in New York City in 1945.

In 1938 she was married to Harry F Kirkpatrick, who preceded her in death on July 25, 2001. She taught in the Springfield Public School system before Harry's Army career took them away from Springfield. She also taught in Sea Cliff NY while they were stationed in New York.

They enjoyed traveling and visited all but North Dakato and Alaska of the 50 states; and while in Trieste, Italy for three years, they visited much of Europe. While living in Trieste, she joined the Red Cross and worked in the military hospital. She received a medal from the British Army Guild of St Helena where she worked in the Anglican church in Trieste; and while stationed in Fort Leonard Wood (Mo) she was president of the Officer's Wives Club and worked in the military hospital. After her husband's retirement they returned to Springfield where they chose to spend the rest of their lives and where she was a member of the Hills County Club and enjoyed playing golf.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Zilpha Moon; she is survived by her brother, Dr Holly Mertel and wife Hiesook; a brother-in-law, Parker Moon, Springfield; a nephew, Max Mertel, great-nephew, Vincent Mertel of Californa; a niece, Celeste Groce and her husband, Robert, Springfield, a great-neice, Shari DeArmon and husband, Mike and their children, Samantha and Nick all of Springfield; a nephew, Fred C Moon and his wife Marilynn, Springfield; a great nephew, John Parker Moon, Springfield; and a niece, Martha Rutherford and husband Pat, Arlington Texas.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday March 23, 2002 in St John's Episcopal Church; Rev Roger Stinnet officiating and Deacon Suzanne Lynch assisting. Burial will follow in Maple Park Cemetery.
