Holly Edgar Mertel held a PhD in Chemistry and was associated with the major chemical company, Merck Sharp & Dohme Labs for many years. In the later years of his career with this company, he served as Senior Resident Fellow and earlier as Resident Chemist.

His credentials are listed in the American Men & Woman of Science for the years 1971 through 2003. He was well-recognized as a chemist and for his many publications of articles in medical and chemistry journals. Many of these publications are found online.

He was also known for his powerful and stirring singing voice, played the piano and had many other interests, including traveling, photography, piloting planes, rock climbing and several hobbies.

As a young man in college he was involved in many musical performances and later in his adult life continued his singing career with his church affiliations and musical productions. He was considered an outstanding baritone.

Dr. Holly Mertel of Westfield, New Jersey and his son, Max, have recently returned from a month long tour of England. Dr. Mertel went as a member of the Tallis Choir of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Westfield.
Dr. Mertel, a senior research chemist for Merck Pharmaceutical Company...is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Mertel of Springfield. The choir performed services and gave recitals in St. Paul's Cahedral, London, and the Cathedrals at Canterbury, Chichester, Salisbury, Gloucester, Ely, Lincoln and Petersborough. The group appeared in various parish churches and attended a state service in Westminster Abby in London.
