Stanley A. Schmitt, 90, of Johnsburg, died Saturday, April 16, 2011, at home with his family by his side.
He was born Jan. 9, 1921, in Johnsburg, to Mathias and Mary (Kattner) Schmitt. He married Margaret Hertel on Nov. 4, 1950, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fremont Center.
In addition to farming, he drove a milk truck, cattle truck and ready-mix truck before retiring from Thelen Sand & Gravel in the early 1980s. He also enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends. Until his death, he held the distinction of being Johnsburg's oldest native resident. He was extremely proud that he lived on the family's farm for 83 years.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his sons, Larry (fiancée Ann Genduso) of Ringwood, Duane (Mary) of Johnsburg and Loren (Colleen) of Johnsburg; his daughters, Barbara (Rick) Mack of Ringwood, Janice (fiancé Roy Piatt) of Shiloh and Patti Schmitt of McHenry; his grandchildren, Cortney, Kyle, Todd (girlfriend, Anna Starus), Adam, Kevin, Carly, Ashly Schmitt and Trevor Mack; and his great-grandchild, Zachery Schmitt.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant daughter, Mary Margaret.
The visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at Colonial Funeral Home, 591 Ridgeview Drive, McHenry, and will continue from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. service Wednesday, April 20, at St. John the Baptist Church, 2303 W. Church St., Johnsburg. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
