Obituary:

Samuel G. Garner, Sr., well known educator and active farm agency executive, died Saturday at Rutherford Hospital after an extended illness. He was 76 years of age.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday from Woodfin Memorial Chapel with N. V. Underwood and Oscar Johns officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens,.

Mr. Garner was born in Samson, Ala., son of the late W. J. and Ida Adkison Garner.

He served in the United States Navy in World War I. He was graduated from the University of Alabama with B. S. degree in education; Auburn University with degree in Agriculture; a Masters Degree from George Peabody College in Nashville, and completed doctorate study in education there.

He served on the faculty of Trevecca College, Nashville; Middle Tennessee State University, and University of Tennessee at Martin, Tennessee.

In his agricultural duties, he served in the following Tennessee cities: Pulaski, Lewisburg, Jackson, Sparta, Martin, and Murfreesboro. Following his retirement twelve years ago, he remained active in volunteer work at the Veterans Hospital in Murfreesboro. He was active in the National Association of Retired Civil Service Employees, having served as the Secretary-Treasurer of the State and Local NARCE chapters. He fellowshipped with the Christians at College Heights Chapel, Murfreesboro.

He is survived by his widow, one son Sam Garner, Jr. of Somerville, Tennessee, three daughters, Mrs. Sara Gray, Livonia, Michigan; Mrs. Betty Twing, Burrao, Wyoming; and Mrs. Dot McGhee of Somerville; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are seven brothers and one sister.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or any other charity.

Active pallbearers are: Bruce Decker, Ben Earthman, Harold Earthman, Sr., Herbert Garrett, Ernest Craig, Thomas Garrett. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Eugene Odom, Dr. Joe Knight, Dr. John L. Bryant, and the men of College Heights Chapel.
