Jazz Singer. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, she began her career in New York, singing with the Count Basie Orchestra in 1938 and remained until 1942. Relocating to California, she embarked on a solo career and wrote and recorded the song "Be-baba-leba", which was a commercial hit in 1945. She recorded tunes for films, television, appeared in many Hollywood music productions and toured until retiring 1967. During the 1970s, she resumed her career appearing with Count Basie at various jazz festivals. She died of cancer at the age of 68, in Santa Monica, California.
