Curly Baker
Nov. 1, 1927-Jan. 17, 2010
William Eugene Curly BAKER, 82, of 2843 N. 400 West, Rochester, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at 11:58 p.m. Sunday at the Woodlawn Hospital emergency room.
He was born Nov. 1, 1927, to William and Tressie Dehm Baker, who preceded him in death. Curly and the former Mary Ruth Kuhn were married Oct. 13, 1948. She preceded him in death March 1, 1953.
Growing up he was one of seven children sharing his childhood with two sisters, Hazel and Betty, and four brothers, Kenny, Wad, Bud and Leonard. He was a proud graduate of Richland Center High School in 1945.
As a dedicated and loyal employee of Rochester Metal Products, Curly worked for 40 years. He also enjoyed life on his family farm west of Rochester. Each year he planted corn, beans and wheat. He took great pride in raising his Hampshire pigs, many times overseeing an operation of over 100. Curly was an avid IU basketball fan, and cheered the Hurryin' Hoosiers to many victories.
To relax, Curly enjoyed escaping to Canada's Caribou Lake for the best fishing trips with his close friends. Paramount in his life were his three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He always followed their many activities and simply enjoyed watching them grow and mature. He was always there to help them or share a bit of wisdom.
Curly was quite an extraordinary cook. He'd create custom recipes, integrating ingredients tailored to satisfy the most 24 discriminating tastes. If it could be done in the kitchen, Curly could handle it with style. From dirt pudding, coconut pie to chili, his culinary skills were crowd-pleasers, always receiving rave reviews. During the holidays he could be found in the kitchen creating fudge. Favorite family flavors were chocolate, peanut butter or pineapple. One of his favorite snacks was popcorn, especially making Jiffy-Pop on the stove top.
A kind-hearted, gentle man, Curly always kept his backyard friends, the birds, fed. His concern for his feathery friends continued till the day he passed away. He also enjoyed observing them in their outdoor habitat. His favorite style of music was country-western.
Curly is survived by his special friend, Wilma June Hart, Rochester; a son, Mickey Baker and wife Connie, Rochester. Three grandchildren, Christina Keyes and husband Seth, Churubusco; Andrew Baker, Ottawa, Ill.; and Rodger Baker, Rochester. Five great-grandchildren, Joshwa and Jonathin Baker, Rochester; and Benjamin Sery, Isabella and Juliet Keys, Churubusco. Two sisters, Hazel Conwell, Rochester, and Betty Alderfer and husband Bob, Yuba City, Calif.; a brother, Kenny Baker and wife Jean, Rochester, and their children, Sarah and William, Rochester; a sister-in-law, Nancy Baker, Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; an infant daughter, Judy Ann; and three brothers, Leonard Baker, Harry "Bud" Baker and Weldon "Wad" Baker.
A celebration of the life of Curly Baker will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with the Rev. Don Nunemaker officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today and one hour prior to the funeral in the funeral home. Interment will be in the Richland Center IOOF Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Woodlawn Home Health Care. Electronic expressions of sympathy may be made to the family at [email protected].
