Barbara Rosnagle, age 78, passed away at her home at The Montebello on Academy on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, following a long and determined battle with metastatic cancer.
Born on May 26, 1932, in Ellwood City, PA, Barbara grew up in Greenville, PA. She graduated in 1953 from the College of Wooster, in Wooster OH, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the music honorary society. After living in Cleveland and Chicago, she moved with her husband, Dr. Robert S. Rosnagle, to Guilford, CT, where she raised their three daughters. (married August 1954)
While in CT, she earned a Masters of Library Science at Southern Connecticut State University, and served as librarian at the Hebrew Day School, the Lyme Public Library, and St. Raphael's Hospital in New Haven, CT. She also served as a member of the Guilford Planning and Zoning Commission, a member of the board of the Guilford Foundation, and as President of the Guilford Library Board.
Upon moving to Albuquerque in 1984, Barbara quickly became involved in community causes. She served as a docent at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, worked to save the petroglyphs on the West Mesa, and lobied in Santa Fe for the League of Women Voters of New Mexico.
Barbara served on various public boards and commissions, always as an advocate for the environment, particularly for the wise use of land and water resources. Her most recent appointment was with the Ground Water Protection Advisory Board to Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.
Throughout her life, Barbara was driven by an intense intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm, which led her to pursue a wide variety of interests. She traveled widely throughout much of the world. At different times she was intensely involved in bridge, in gardening, and in studies of the Southwest, to name a few of her many pursuits.
Barbara is survived by her three daughters, Elizabeth Hefferon of McLean, VA, Susan Kresge of Wayne, NJ, and Diane Short of Albuquerque, NM, two brothers, Peter Mortensen and David Mortensen, as well as seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert S. Rosnagle.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, April 9, 2011, at Sandia Presbyterian Church, 10704 Paseo del Norte NE. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of one's choice.
