She was a loving wife and mother. Mrs. Hopper was a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Surry. She retired after 27 years as a teacher for Surry County Public Schools and was a published author.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, R. Ashton Gwaltney and Rebecca Frances Berryman Gwaltney; and her husband, Mr. Laurie Pennington Hopper.
Mrs. Hopper is survived by her daughter, Patsy E. H. Rush and husband, John; son, Thomas P. Hopper and wife, Alice A.; brother, R. Charles Gwaltney and wife, Jennifer; sister, Martha G. Coward and husband, David; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2011,
at the Wakefield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, in Surry, with the Rev. Macon Walton officiating. Burial will follow at Claremont Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Surry, VA 23883; or the American Cancer Society , 604 Constance Woods Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434.
