She was born March 2, 1912, at Altamont to Grover and Mary (Stevenson) Patterson. Her family moved to Montana to homestead when she was 2 years old. Later they moved to northern Idaho. They moved to a farm south of Altamont in 1924.

She graduated from Labette County High School in Altamont in 1930 and from Parsons Junior College in 1934. From 1934 to 1938 she taught at a school in rural Edna.

She married James C. "Jim" Kelley on April 2, 1938, in Columbus. They farmed on several plots of land in Labette County and moved to Parsons in 1948. In 1979, they moved to Altamont. In recent years she had lived in a nursing home in Overland Park. He preceded her in death on May 23, 1990.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Altamont and Caldwell Circle. For several years she was the head cook at Parsons Junior High School.

Survivors include a son, Leonard Kelley and his wife, Janet, of Wichita; a daughter, Marlene Kelley and her husband, Raymond, of Overland Park; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
