His draft registration card dated June 5, 1917 lists his age as 22 and birth date as May 1, 1895 in Stroud, Lincoln, Oklahoma; however John was actually born in 1896 and the Registration Card is in error. He was unmarried, with brown eyes and hair, living at 719 North Eighths Street, in Sapulpa, Oklahoma at the time.

John's grave marker inscription says "PVT 54 Field ARTY 18 DIV" which means he was in the USA ARMY as Rank Grade of "Private" in the 54th Field Artillery, 18th Division.
