Vera Mae Miller, daughter of Walter Raleigh and Ida Mae Grover, was born on February 3, 1926 at Modesto, California. She became a believer in Jesus Christ and was baptized in her teen years. At the time of her death she was a member of the Ripon Grace Brethren Church, Ripon, CA.

Vera met Donald Ellis Miller when he came to California from Indiana. They were married on March 2, 1946 (his birthday) and settled in California. They were blessed with four children. Mom said that's when she learned to pray—I guess we were a handful and a challenge at times.

Dad and Mom moved often, going where Dad could find work. Mom's job was to make a cozy home wherever she lived and she did it very well with very few resources. She could make what other people considered junk into treasures. She was also skilled at sewing. All our clothes were homemade from hand-me-downs. She didn't need a pattern to turn out clothing we were proud to wear.

Mom especially enjoyed the time she and Dad spent building churches for Southern Baptist Congregations and ministering to young men at the Youth Authority in Ione. They opened their home and discipled men who were struggling to reenter society after serving time in prison. Mother became "Mom" to many men who did not have a biological mother who loved them.

Mother and Dad were blessed with 62 years of loving marriage. Shortly after they moved to Orangeburg Manor in 2008, Dad passed away. She remained in assisted living at the Manor and received excellent care from the wonderful staff until she moved to heaven on April 3, 2011.

Vera is survived by four children and their spouses: Lois and her husband Glen Shirk, Ronald and his wife Joyce, Ann and her husband Bruce Filbrun and Dale and his wife Carol. She was welcomed into heaven by her best friend, Jesus; her husband, her parents; two brothers, Mervin and Sheldon and their wives; one sister, Frieda Denlinger; and many friends.

Her visitation will be Wednesday, 4/6/2011 from 4:00-7:00pm at Deegan Ripon Chapel. Her service will be on Thursday, 4/7/2011 at 1:00pm at Ripon Grace Brethren Church. Burial in the Wood Colony Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank all who have helped them through these difficult times. Thank you for visiting mother, praying for her and us, phone calls, and other expressions of concern. We wish to extend special thanks to the wonderful people who cared for Mom at Orangeburg Manor and the staff of Community Hospice. All of you exceeded our expectations. May your reward be eternal. We love you all.
