John Borst was born in Germany; married Sylvia Rieb in 1863 and they were the parents of eleven children. Eight died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Borst come to America in 1882 and they settled on a farm near Dedham, Carroll county, Iowa. Their three children were: Margaret who married Walter Wegner; Sylvia who married Michael Gute, and son, Nick who married Anna Catherine Wille. The Borst family were known as prosperous, energetic farmers. In 1908 they moved to Carroll. Both 1900 and 1910 census shows a Katherine Reib, a sister-in-law living with John and Sylvia. The 1920 census shows John and Sylvia Borst living with Walter Wegner and daughter, Irene, on Adans Street in Carroll, Iowa.
