It is with heartfelt emotion to Announce the Sudden Passing of Merritt Percival Couse Snyder "Spike", Resident of Port Orchard, at the University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle, WA, on September 2, 2010. "Spike" had fought a Courageous Battle with Cancer on Four Different Occasions and was again, fighting Cancer for the Fifth Time, in Addition to Diabetes and COPD.

Merritt was Born in Plainfield, New Jersey on September 4, 1947, the Son of Howard Percival Snyder, MD and Irene Dawes (Merritt) Snyder. Merritt lived most of his Younger Years in Scotch Plaines, New Jersey, in a Beautiful Colonial Home, which today is on the National Register of Historic Places. "Spike" loved this Home and frequently reminisced about it. When not at this Beautiful Colonial Home, "Spike" was Vacationing in Ontario, Canada on Charleston Lake at his Families Island Home/Boathouse, he even Traveled the World with his Parents when he was 7 Years of Age and what a Trip that Was. "Spike" frequently talked about this Memorable Vacation.

Merritt attended Schools in Scotch Plaines, New Jersey and Private Schools in Rhinebeck, New York, Florida and the Garland School in Chester, New Jersey. "Spike" graduated with his A.A.S. Degree in Human Services from Inver Hills Community College in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota in 1997.

"Spike" worked in a Number of Professions during his Life including General Motors on the Assembly Line, Linden, New Jersey, at Various Chemical Companies in Research/Analysis, was a Labor Union Organizer, also a Graduate of the Houston School of Bartending, working at one time as a Bartender in Houston, Texas and Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Merritt has not only lived in Scotch Plaines and Linden, New Jersey, he also resided in Birmingham, Alabama, Houston, Texas, Las Vegas, Nevada, New Castle, Delaware, St. Paul, MN and prior to his Death, in Port Orchard, Washington. "Spike" absolutely loved Port Orchard and the Kitsap Peninsula, never wanting to leave this area since his Arrival in July 1999, frequently saying this was his favorite place he had ever Lived, "it is Heaven."

"Spike" was a Lover of All Animals, especially Cats, Squirrels and frequently fed the Neighborhood Racoons and Birds and purchased Bread to Feed the Local Geese and Seagulls. One of Merritt's favorite Past-times was writing Poetry and Working on becoming a Member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, as he had direct bloodline descent from William J. Couse – General #6 and William Dawes. Merritt was also a Proud Member of the Sons of Norway. In addition, "Spike" loved to Travel with his Wife, Melinda, especially on Road Trips, staying in Bed and Breakfast Inns and Cabins. Unfortunately, "Spike" was unable to Travel like he had previously due to Health Concerns, but, still always talked of being able to Travel again in the Future.

Merritt is Survived by his Loving Wife, Melinda K. Morse, R.N., his Children, Andrew Howard Snyder (Jutta Gassner-Snyder) of Maplewood, New Jersey, Irene Dawes Snyder of San Francisco, California and Merritt Percival Dawes Snyder (Angela McBride) of Homer, Alaska, Two Granddaughters, Kayla Christine Gassner-Snyder and Gillian Jeanette Pellegrino and Sister, Laura (Snyder) Kranz of Imperia, Italy. Merritt is also Survived by his Mother-in-Law, Diana Jean Morse of Bremerton, Washington, Brother-in-Law, Eugene Culver Morse of Bremerton, Washington, Sister and Brother-in-Law, Chandie Lynn (Morse) Bartell (Paul F. Bartell) of Potlatch, Idaho and Sister and Brother-in-Law, Connie Lee (Morse) Spivey (Don S. Spivey) of Coeur d Alene, Idaho, Cousin, Carl Mortensen of Lake Wales, Florida, Marlynn (Mortensen) Surles of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mildred (Mortensen) Moritz of Panama City, Florida as Well as Many Nieces, Nephews, additional Cousins and Many Friends.

Merritt was Preceded in Death by his Mother and Father, Wife, Jeanette Marion (Pellegrino) Snyder, Aunt, Jeanette (Merritt) Phaneuf, Uncle, Richard Merritt, Cousins, Richard, Marie, Johnny, Curtis, Rudy and Many More.

A Memorial Service to Celebrate Merritt's Life will be held for Close Family and Friends on September 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Haven of Rest, Funeral Home, located at 8503 Highway 16, Gig Harbor, WA 98332. Telephone #: 253-851-9991. Flowers may be Sent prior to the Start of the Memorial.
