August Riess, First Elkhart Supervisor, Dies Early Today
Elkhart Lake – (Special) – Two years ago August Riess, the first supervisor of this village, sat with his wife at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Matthias, and smiled happily as many friend congratulated them on their 60th wedding anniversary. Today there is sorrow in the Matthias home, for August Riess died at 2 o'clock this morning after being sick for about a month. Mr. Riess was 87 years old when he died. He was born in Germany, Feb. 28, 1852, and came to this country as a boy. He married Elizabeth Reichert, a native of the town of Rhine on Jan. 7, 1877, and the couple came to his budding community the following year where Mr. Riess operated a tavern until 1880 when he started a general store. A year later his success as a storekeeper enabled him to build a new store which he managed until his retirement in 1899.
Known and admired by all the pioneers of this section, Mr. Riess was instrumental in having the village incorporated. He served on the county board for 19 years and was police justice here for 20 years. Both he and his were charter member of St. John's Evangelical church.
Survivors are his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Jacob Engelman Neenah, Mrs. Ida Neuhaus of St. Louis, Mo., and Mrs. Matthias; a son William Riess of New Holstein; brother, M. C. Riess of town Rhine; 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Raeder funeral home here with the Rev. J. Lowenbergh officiating. Interment will be made in the Elkhart Lake cemetery.
