Mary Agnes Morningstar, 93, of 14014 Marsh Pike, Hagerstown, formerly of Barnesville, died Friday, Feb. 5, at Avalon Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown.

Miss Morningstar was the first woman mayor of Barnesville.

Born April 21, 1905, in Barnesville, she was a daughter of the late Edgar John and Agnes H. Manion Morningstar.

Miss Morningstar was a life-long resident of Barnesville, where she was baptized June 1, 1905, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, by the Rev. Gilbert McDonald.

She began her teaching career in the summer of 1921 at a one-room school in Comas, and taught or was principal of schools in Montgomery County for 52 years. She received many recognitions and awards, including selection as most outstanding teacher in America in 1974, and special recognition in appreciation for successful teaching career from President Gerald Ford in 1975. She is listed in the World Book of Who's Who.

She held emeritus life membership in the Montgomery County Education Association, and was a member of the National Education Association and the Maryland State Teachers Association.

Miss Morningstar is survived by several cousins.

Mrs. Morningstar was preceded in death by one sister, Catherine Morningstar Dill.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, in Monocacy Cemetery, Dickerson.
