Mary Elizabeth Sloan was the daughter of Emory Niles Sloan and Margaret Maggie Knapp. She married Vernon Burr Sheldon of Eaton County, Michigan, on June 30, 1909. They had three children, John David Sheldon (1910 - 2002), Ruth Eileen Sheldon (1913 - 1962) and Helen Sheldon (1916 - 1916).
Although Vernon remarried after her death in 1917, they are interred together near the Sheldon monument and extended family.
