Mr. Owen LeGrand Scott, 87, of Oak Ridge Farm, Dickerson, a retired executive editor of U.S. News and World Report, died Tuesday, Aug. 27 at a hospital in Sarasota, Fla., after a
stroke.

He was the husband of Margarete Martini Scott.

Born in Sioux Falls, S.D., Mr. Scott was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin. After college, he was a reporter for the Springfield, Mass., Republican and for the Associated Press. In 1924 he became manager of the Western Division of Consolidated [?] Association owned by David Lawrence, the late publisher of U.S. News.

Mr. Scott retired from U.S. News and World Report in 1969 after a 36-year career with the magazine that began when he moved to Washington, D.C. in 1933 to join the Board of Editors of what was then called the United States News. He became the executive editor in 1938 and guided the magazine through several transitions from a small weekly publication concentrating on government affairs to a national magazine with a circulation of more than 2 million. As an executive editor at U.S. News, Mr. Scott directed the news staff and determined the content of each issue.

Additionally, he wrote its lead story each week, "Tomorrow, A Look Ahead From the Nation's Capital".

Since retirement, Mr. Scott had lived at Sarasota and at his farm in Dickerson. He was a member of the Columbia Country Club, The National Press Club and the Cosmos Club.

Surviving besides his wife are one son, David Owen Scott, Dickerson; and three grandchildren, David Owen Scott Jr., Deborah Anne Scott and Donald Christopher Scott.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4 at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road, Barnesville. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Barnesville, Md.
