Charles Roszier Bodmer, son of Carrie Melissa (née Wiles) and Jacob Bodmer, junior, was born in Darnestown, Maryland. His family later moved to Poolesville, Maryland.
On 25 May 1918, he was inducted as a private, and arrived in France in July 1918, serving in the 313th Ambulance Company, 79th Infantry Division. He received an American Expeditionary Forces Citation for Gallantry in Action for action on 2 November 1918 in attempting to repair his ambulance (while transporting wounded personnel) "in plain view of the enemy and under intense artillery fire." He was promoted to private first class (PFC) on 15 November 1918. PFC Bodmer was honorably discharged on 10 June 1919. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal, and Serbia's Order of St. Sava.
Charles Roszier Bodmer of Poolesville and Zada Florence Ryman of Barnesville, Maryland, were married on 8 March 1921 in Washington, D.C. The couple had two children: Pearl Louise, and Charles Roszier, junior.
Charles R. Bodmer worked for the U.S. Post Office Department as a rural mail carrier. He was an active member of the Poolesville Methodist Church, and taught Sunday School. He was also a charter member of the Poolesville Community Band, and a board member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Poolesville.
