Grace Almira Jewell was born August 21, 1922 to James Porter Jewell and Susan Charlotte (Smith) Jewell in the Presbyterian manse at Corwin, Kansas. Her father was a Presbyterian minister and pastored several small churches in Kansas. As Grace was ready to begin eighth grade, the family moved from Bennington, Kansas to Fredericktown, Missouri. Grace graduated from Fredericktown High School in 1939.

Grace attended St. Luke's School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri, graduating in May of 1943. She married Robert Lee Gates on September 6th, 1942 at her parents' home in Fredericktown, and moved to Robert's farm southwest of Anthony in September 1943. Their first son was stillborn on July 4, 1944. Robert and Grace were blessed with five other children: John Robert, James Earl, Jack Charles, Joyce Elizabeth and Jerome Lee.

As there was no crop insurance in those days, Grace worked as a nurse to help meet family expenses. She worked private duty at the Galloway Hospital, also worked on the "floor," and served as director of nurses. She was the director of nurses when the hospital moved into their new facility in the fall of 1961.

Grace developed the local school nurse program working at Washington School from 1949 through 1952.

On September 6, 1966, with Betty Carmichael as secretary, Grace started the Harper County Home Health Agency which developed in to the Harper County Health Department in 1967. She served on the board of the development of the Kansas Association of Home Health Agency and was the first president. She served on the board to develop the Chikaskia Area Training Center. She was a Kansas Department of Health District Nurse in Dodge City from April 1974 until her retirement in May 1987 at which time she and Robert moved back to the farm southwest of Anthony.

In 1978, Grace earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Fort Hayes State University. She was also one of Kansas's first ARNPs (Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner).

Grace went to her home in Heaven on March 24, 2011. Grace was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, and her husband, Robert.

Grace is survived by her children John Gates and his wife Peggy; James Gates and his wife Carol "Sparky"; Jack Gates and his wife Janice; Joyce Kaup and her husband Gerald; and Jerome Gates and his wife Reta all of Anthony, KS; brother James Jewell of Washington, Iowa; sisters Charlotte Wilson and her husband Bob of Des Moines, Iowa; and Pauline Mouser and her husband Clyde of St. Charles, Missouri; 21 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 28, 2011 at the Christian Church in Anthony, Kansas with Hospice Chaplain Dan Floyd officiating. Interment will be at Forest Park Cemetery, Anthony, KS.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 27th from 1:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m. at the Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Anthony.

Memorials in memory of Grace may be given to the Hopewell Presbyterian Church, or The Gideon's International, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
