Oliver Chapin Hollister was born 6 Feb 1833 in Cornwall, CT to Dr. Isaac Treat Hollister born 1801, Sharon, CT and Ellen Chapin, born 1806, East Bloomfield, NY. His parents migrated through Ontario County, New York and then to Victor Twp, Clinton County, Michigan as many other descendants of New England colonists did also. The farm he grew up on was called Seven Oaks Farm in the untamed wilderness of Clinton County, Michigan. He was the first-born son of three brothers; Charles Edward Hollister and Ralph Heman Hollister; and a younger sister Dr. Caroline Amelia Hollister. Their oldest sister Mary Skiff Brunson was adopted by his parents at two years of age in 1929. The 1850 census shows Oliver living in his father's household and farming.

Oliver C. Hollister married Margaret Jamison, (daughter of John Jamison, a neighbor in Victor) on 26 Jan 1857. They had three children; Ada Byron Hollister, George Jamison Hollister and Dr. Ralph Oliver Hollister. In the 1860 United States Federal Census, Oliver, a lumberman wife Margaret and their daughter Ada lived near both of their parents in this small community. Oliver responded to the call to serve, his patriotic duty since several of his ancestors served in the Revolution. The Hollister Family of America cites Oliver Chapin Hollister as a machinist. I'm certain Dr. Isaac Treat Hollister (Oliver's father) supplied his family information to the author and a great deal of other descendants as well.

On 29 Mar 1864, Private Oliver C. Hollister served with Company H, Michigan 5th Calvary Regiment. He enlisted at Grand Rapids, Michigan (Source: Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers 1861-65). He died age 31, of chronic diarrhea in Philadelphia, PA, 4 Sep 1864 and was laid to rest in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Section 200 (Soldier's Lot) site 298.

Margaret received a widow's pension and she died in Louisiana where her sons relocated and raised families.
