Confederate veteran. (County of birth was Walker at time of birth and now Catoosa County.) Son of O.H.P. and Jane Johnston Caldwell. Student at Stewart College, Clarksville, Tennessee, when war broke out. Left school and enlisted in Vaughn's 3rd Tennessee Infantry Regiment. After service in Virginia, he became ill and later enlisted in Company E, 59th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. In battles at Perryville and Champion's Hill. Captured at Vicksburg. Exchanged. Longstreet's Knoxville Campaign. In 1864 was under Early in Shenandoah Valley and fought at Martinsburg, Winchester and Fisher's Hill. Captured again and paroled at Macon, Georgia. Studied law at University of Virginia, and located in Chattanooga in 1867. Became Clerk & Master of Chancery Court in 1870. Married Elizabeth Stephenson Gillespie in 1873. President of Chattanooga Gas Light Company over 30 years. Presbyterian. Died at home on corner of McCallie and Lindsay.
