MARY FRANCES (BRYANT) RICE SEXTON PATE

─═════════ ✿ڰۣڿ✿ Biography ✿ڰۣڿ✿ ═════════─

Nearly three years after their marriage, Paul and Ruth Bryant had their first baby. Living on the corner of 10th and Lincoln in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana, they welcomed a "pretty 9-pound daughter," on 13 September 1917, according the newspaper clipping. At the time of her birth her father, Paul, was 23 years old and her mother, Ruth, was 19.

By the 1920 Census, Mary three years old and living with her father and mother on 7th street in Bloomington. Just 14 months before the census was taken the family buried a son, Charles Edwin Bryant, who was three months old at the time of his death.

In March 1921 another brother was born. Keith Dale was the second brother to Mary Frances, but the only living brother. Then in 1923 another boy joined the family. Marion Eugene only spent nine months with the family. He died the same year of his birth.

According to the 1930 Census the family was living at 723 Eight Street in Bloomington, Indiana. Mary was 12 years old and Keith was 9.

1933 was a big year for Mary. She was married to William Floyd Rice and her first child was born. At the time of this writing their first child is still living and their privacy will be protected. Since their marriage Mary's little family had a very difficult time. Her husband had not been able to find work since his marriage and by early 1934 Mary was pregnant with another child. The pressure of not being able to provide for his family was too much for William. He took his life in February 1934. William was young, only 20 years old, and afraid his family would be taken off the relief rolls. In October 1934, Mary and her late husband's son was born, Frederick Ray Rice.

Sometime in 1935, or possibly 1934, Mary Frances remarried. Her second husband was Seagle Seymore Sexton. Seagle was born in Tennessee and he was around 18 years her senior. By the 1940 Census they were living at 903 North Jackson Street in Bloomington. They had added two children to their home. At the time of this writing both children are living. Their youngest son, and Mary's last child, was born in May of 1941. Ronald Keith Sexton would prove to be a handful during his pre-teen and teenage years.

The marriage of Seagle and Mary was dissolved in September 1945. Seagle was remarried to Garnet Hyde on 11 October 1945. According to their marriage application both of their marriages were dissolved in September 1945. Seagle and Garnet remained married until his death in 1972.

Mary had a tougher time with love. She was married twice more between Seagle and her final marriage to Calvin Pate. Calvin gave her the stable love that she needed, and she was the spark of fun in his life. It was always a treat when we got together. For many of the kids my age, she was their grandma, but I always felt lucky because she was an awesome aunt. The things I remember most about her…her blond hair piled high on her head, her red lips (she always wore lipstick even if she had no other make up on), and how fun she was. Whether she was our grandma or aunt, when she came around, all of the kids gathered around her.

We had our last family get-together with her in June 1975. It took place at my parent's house. Certainly the children didn't know that it would be the last time we would be with her. My siblings and I were told that she was sick, but we didn't understand or know just how sick. She passed away four weeks later on 20 July 1975. Her funeral was the first that I clearly remember, and even though I was barely ten years old, I still remember seeing her lying there in her blue dress.

She's still missed in our family. Her name comes up often. But we still have our stories, photos, and our memories. We'll always have our memories.
