MARILYN ROSE (BRYANT) HAMM

─══ ✿ڰۣڿ✿ Biography ✿ڰۣڿ✿ ══─

Marilyn Rose Bryant was born on 5 April 1933, in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. Her father, Paul, was 38 years old and her mother, Ruth, was 34. She had one sister, Mary Frances, who was nicknamed, Hazel, and one brother, Keith, who was nicknamed, Bud. She also had two deceased brothers, Charles and Marion.

Ruth was the strict parent who wanted to raise her children in a good, Christian home. Paul was the fun parent, whom Marilyn adored. She fondly remembered sitting on the porch steps with her dad eating crackers and oysters. I think he had a sweet spot for his little girl because I remember countless stories my mom told me about her father sneaking her candy or a soda pop, things that Ruth didn't want her daughter to have and Paul would always tell her, "It's our little secret."

Her time with her father was short. Paul died in 1941 when Marilyn was just seven years old.

Marilyn always had an outgoing personality. She loved to be around people, even as a child. She spent many hours at Joe's Skating Rink, where she would meet her future husband. Please see Charles Marion Hamm's Biography for more information about that.

While they were dating, Chuck would normally get off work and go immediately to pick Marilyn up. So, of course, just getting off work he would normally be dressed in jeans and a t-shirt or sometimes a white short-sleeved shirt. Once when he asked her to go on a date with him she agreed to go, but she told him to dress up; she said she was tired of seeing him in the same type of clothes all the time. That evening all the ladies in the neighborhood were sitting on Ruth's porch (Marilyn's mother) to see if Chuck had actually dressed up for their date. Sure enough, he arrived that evening with dress pants and a dress shirt on. Mom said they were the talk of the neighborhood for a couple of days.

Marilyn and Chuck were married on 2 February 1952, by his relative, Harley Hamm. They were married in Monroe County, Indiana. They made their home in Solsberry for the first eight years of their marriage.

Marilyn and Chuck longed to have children of their own, but for around five years they gave their love, and at times opened their home, to their nieces and nephews. Finally, Marilyn found out she was going to have a baby of her own. As her niece, Sue Martindale, has said on numerous occasions, "Once Marilyn had her own children all other kids ceased to exist." She was right. My mother loved all of her children and she would do anything in the world for them.

Her first child, Stephen Nelson Hamm, was born on 1 July 1958, in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana. Her second child, Katina Lynn Hamm, was born on 8 March 1960, also in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana. And then a few years later I came along.

When the children were older, she decided to work outside of the home. Her love of people led her to become, of all things, a bartender, although she didn't drink alcohol. Her drink of choice was Diet Coke. She worked as a bartender for many, many years and was extremely successful at it. Once it became so demanding on her physically, she switched gears and started cooking at one of the sororities at Indiana University. After doing that job for several years, Marilyn found out she was diabetic and decided she needed a less stressful occupation. She began babysitting for a family that she simply fell in love with. Their little boy was just eight months old when she started. Four years later, the couple had another child, which thrilled my Mom. She continued to watch the little boys until they no longer needed a babysitter. At the time of this writing, they are grown men. I don't know if they know just how much she loved them.

As for her own children, her son, Steve, was killed in an automobile accident on 25 January 1982, while he was traveling to Indiana State University. Her oldest daughter, Katina, died four years later on 21 April 1986, from an illness. Neither one married.

She spent her retirement years with her husband. Together they would go to the V.F.W. to play poker. Marilyn could also be found playing Cherry Master slot machines at various establishments around Bloomington. Occasionally, she and Chuck would go on the gambling boats. Although marriage wasn't always easy, in their later years they truly had a partnership and an appreciation for each other that they had never before experienced.

Her world came crashing down around her on 25 August 2001. Her husband of 49 years suddenly died of a massive heart attack. She had to sell their 24-acre farm that they had shared since 1960 and she was suddenly alone for the first time in her life.

She decided to move back to Bloomington, the place of her childhood. She lived there for a couple of years before deciding to have a house built in Trafalgar, Indiana.

In 2005 she found out she had cancer. She fought a hard battle, but lost the war. My Mom passed away on 7 January 2007 with me and my husband with her. Her death was a very spiritual experience for me and I know that she is with her beloved husband and children.

She was buried on her husband's birthday, January 11, at Valhalla Memory Gardens in Bloomington, Indiana. Her headstone is adorned with the three cherries that always seemed to elude her.

● Marilyn's middle name was "Rose" which is why I chose the roses on each side of her headstone. She also loved to play the game "Cherry Master" so I had to give her three cherries at the bottom.
