Laura Frances Clark was the daughter of William W. Clark and Louisa Taylor Clark, who was the daughter of Methodist circuit rider in Alabama and Mississippi, the Rev. Isaac Taylor. He and two brothers, Harris and William, were a trio of Methodist circuit riders in early Alabama and Mississippi history (beginning in the 1820's).

She married George W. Hamby, the son of Jesse N. Hamby of North Carolina and Martha Hughes Hamby of Georgia. They married in Greensboro, AL.

The story in the family is that they "followed the mills" as did his father. George was in the cotton industry during reconstruction and moved to different places in Mississippi and Alabama, eventually winding up in Cottondale, AL near Tuscaloosa. She and her husband George were active members of Brandon Memorial Methodist Church (now called Trinity UMC in Tuscaloosa).

Their children were James Earley Hamby, Rev. William T. Hamby, George Brady Hamby, Rev. Charles Pinkney Hamby Sr., Lugene Bryant Hamby, Henry Clarence Hamby, Louella Hamby, and Jesse Gene Hamby.
