From the SOUTH BEND (IN) TRIBUNE, March 13, 2011:

SOUTH BEND - Jack K. Merrill Sr., 79, of South Bend, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2011, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. He was born on December 31, 1931, in South Bend, to the late Herbert and Marian (Jenkins) Merrill, and was a lifelong area resident.

Jack is survived by his daughters, Tammie Merrill of South Bend and Lori (Gary) Gotha of Osceola; his sons, Jack Jr. (Michele) of South Bend, Mark of Granger, Randy (Michelle) of Mishawaka and Mike of South Bend; a sister, Dolores (Paul) Allison; and a brother, Ron (Liz), both of Osceola; and by 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeff Merrill.

Jack's hobbies included TV repair; he was owner of Chain'O'Lakes TV Service and made most of his testing equipment from scratch. He was an avid photographer and did his own developing of the pictures he took. He was always tinkering with his cars and did much of his own mechanical work. He loved Harley-Davidsons, and his beloved 1965 Sprint is still in the family's possession. Jack was a 1950 graduate of the old Wilson High School, South Bend. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in his early 20s before he was honorably discharged in 1957. Jack's work career included 30 years at Bendix where he excelled in fuel controls, and happily retired in 1986 at the young age of his early 50s.

He was surrounded by his loved ones at the time of a very peaceful passing and is now with the Lord. He leaves behind his children, grandchildren, family, friends, the pets that he loved, and his renewed companionship with our mother, Blanche, who he married in 1952.
