Jack was living in Ellis County Texas, when his Dad Jessie told him to go out to Knox County Texas to find them some land. He and Leta was married and had Mary Elizabeth. In June of 1898 he and his brother-in-law started for Knox County. He bought a half section of land South of the old Wren place. They built a half dug-out on it. In September of 1898, they moved their first load , two wagons loads of possessions for his father and one for himself. He and his brother Dan went back to Ellis County to finish gathering the crops and getting the business all settled. In January of 1899 they joined their families in Knox County. Living conditions were very hard, they lived in the dug-out (half under ground and half above ground). Skunks and snakes often frequented the dug-out. At times when they were away and came home, Uncle Jack would throw dirt clods down into the dug-out so the shunks and snakes would go back into holes in the walls. He would then go down and plug up the holes and Leta would put the kids to bed and cover them with a wagon sheet. They lived there for about a year, when three men from Johnson County Texas, Bill Hardin, J. J. Gray and Mr. Bailey came by looking for land to buy. Uncle Jack sold all the land for ten dollars an acre, except for 100 acres that he kept for his Dad & Mom. He made a good profit as he had only paid four dollars an acre for it. He then bought land at Red Top Community. They lived at Red Top for two or three years, before buying the farm West of Munday, Texas and building a two story house on it. Jack & Leta raised their thirteen at this farm. They lived there until their deaths. Uncle Jack was a very industrious man, he ran a freight line from Seymour to Munday and later from Munday to Stamford.

WALLACE RITES SET

MUNDAY TEXAS--Funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday 25 th of August 1962 at the Munday Church of Christ for W. J. (Uncle Jack) Wallace, 91, resident here since 1898, He died at 8 a.m. Thursday 23 day of August 1962. in the Knox County Hospital at Knox City Texas following a three month illness.

Officiating will be Payne Hattox, minister of the Goree Church of Christ, assisted by Howard Emerson minister of the Munday Church. Burial in the Johnson Memorial Cemetery will be directed by McCauley Funeral Home.

Mr. Wallace was born July 18 1871 (Hope Arkansas??)and married Mary Leta Owen in Ellis Co. Texas September 19, 1896 and they move to Knox County Texas in 1898. Mrs Wallace died in 1953.

He had 53 grand-children & 73 great-grand-children & 4 great-great-grand-children.
