James Columbus "J.C." Hartman, Jr. of Wellington died Friday, August 15, 2008 in Wellington. J.C. was born May 11, 1921 to James Columbus Sr. and Effie Gleaton Hartman in the Buck Creek Community. He was the youngest of five children. J.C. graduated from Wellington High School and then attended business school in Wichita Falls. He joined the Navy December 31, 1941 and attended training at Great Lakes Training Center in Chicago. During the war he was stationed aboard the destroyer escort, USS Edsall and during his 29 months of active duty in the Navy he crossed the Atlantic 14 times. He was honorably discharged September 30, 1945. J.C. met his wife to be, Madonna Belle Thomas, on a train from Boston to Chicago. He married Madonna on June 9, 1945 in New York City while still serving in the Navy. Madonna was born in Armiesburg, Indiana. J.C. was a Christian and an active deacon for many years in the Buck Creek Missionary Baptist Church west of Wellington. He later served as a member and deacon of the Port Mansfield Community Church in Port Mansfield. After selling their retirement home on the Texas Gulf Coast in 2002, Madonna and J.C. became members of the First Baptist Church of Wellington. J.C. began farming alongside his father when he returned from the Navy with his new Yankee bride. Madonna came to Texas in August 1945 while waiting for Jay's discharge. He was a farm and ranch operator west of Wellington and especially enjoyed working with cattle. During the 1970's he was part owner of the City Grocery. He loved his family, farming and fishing. J.C. will be remembered by many in the community for his "Fish Fries". He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Elmer "Pete" and Melvin "Shorty" Hartman; and two sisters Alma Patterson and Lorene Lacy. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Madonna, two children: Ronnie Hartman and wife Frieda and Mitzi Killian and husband Gary all of Wellington; seven grandchildren: Tim Hartman, Leandra Branum and husband Kevin, Lucas Hartman, DeLanea Bronson and husband Eric, Keli Ponder and husband Joe, Mical Holland and husband Brandon and Vance Killian and wife Kelli and nine great grandchildren: Alex, Shannon, and Jordan Hartman, James and John.
