Caroline Elizabeth Keller Insall Ward was the daughter of William Keller and Christianna Kennerly. She was born on June 14, 1821 in St. Matthew's Parish, Orangeburg Co, SC. Caroline's father was a wealthy planter and his family spent summers in the Bayou Chicot area where there was a health spa. That is where Caroline met Richard Insall. They were married January 23, 1837 in St. Landry (now Evangeline) Parish, LA. The family of Richard Insall lived on Bayou Chicot on the Thomas Holifield Insall plantation. Richard Insall and Caroline Keller were the parents of Alzenith Elizabeth Insall born May 29, 1841 in Bayou Bluff, Avoyelles Parish, LA. Richard, Caroline, and daughter Alzenith entered the Republic of Texas on Dec. 29, 1841, proceeding to the Buffalo Bayou area in Harrisburg, now part of Houston, TX. Caroline missed her family, was terrified of the Indians, and decided to take Alzenith back to Louisiana. Caroline, embarrassed by the situation, made up a story that Richard had fallen off a cliff while horseback riding and died; however, she told her daughter the truth. In fact, Alzenith and her father corresponded by letter.

Richard remained in Texas, met another woman (also named Caroline) and wanted to get legally married. Caroline Keller and Richard Insall divorced on August 30, 1852 in Colorado Co, TX. Richard's second wife was Caroline Mims. They were married on November 13, 1853 in Hallettsville, Lavaca Co, TX. After first wife Caroline moved back to Louisiana, she met Daniel Sylvester Ward and had three additional children: Nancy Alice Ward born March 5, 1849 (before Richard and Caroline's divorce), William Foreman Ward born July 13, 1859, and Susan Frances Ward born August 21, 1861. When or if Caroline married Daniel Ward is unknown; however, she did use the surname Ward. Caroline died on June 28, 1908. She is buried next to daughter Alzenith Insall Hodges in Magnolia Cemetery, Ragley, Beauregard Pa, LA. The name on her tombstone is Caroline E. Ward. It is one of the oldest in the cemetery and is broken in half but was repaired in 2016. She is my great great great grandmother.
