Mary A. (LOCK) STRONG, wife of Henry K. STRONG (Sr.), was mother to 9 children, 8 of which were alive in 1900 when she was a 60 year old widow with 4 grown children living with her and one grandchild, Earl Strong POWELL. On 4 Jun 1900 they were living at 519 W 2nd St in Dixon, Lee, Illinois, USA. Any house at that address must have been torn town prior to the construction of the Loveland Community Center around 1939.The 15 Apr 1910 census found "Mrs. Mary A. Strong" living with the family of her youngest daughter, Mary "Mamie" (STRONG) and her second husband, Ishmael Bee NICHOLS (who went by "Bee"). The family was renting a house at 402 E 4th St, Sterling, Whiteside, Illinois, USA. Living with them was their son, Glenn A. NICHOLS and her first son, Earl Strong POWELL. In 1910, Mrs. Mary A. (LOCK) STRONG was 70 years old and had been widowed for some time and was no longer listed as the head of the household, but simply as "Mother-in-Law" (of "Bee" NICHOLS).The elder, Mary (LOCK) (LOCKE ?) STRONG, had her leg crushed in a carriage accident. (I think she was using a mounting block and the horse spooked and her leg was mangled between the carriage & mounting stone. The leg was amputated and buried along the edge of a family farm. My mom now says the farm was located north of Dixon on the way to Lowell Park. Previously, I thought the farm was located near what they used to call the "funny farm" where the STRONG's owned land. In any event, my gr-grandmother would have been a one-legged woman prior to her death. No idea when the accident happened. Perhaps Terry NICHOLS of Dixon might know the story.Mary Alice (LOCK) STRONG would have been 80 years old on the 1920 census and she is no longer listed as living with her youngest daughter's family. I assume that she died sometime after 1910 and before 1920. She is buried near her husband, Henry K. Strong "Sr", in Dixon, Lee, Illinois, USA. One of her sons is Henry K. Strong "Jr". Her youngest daughter, Mary "Mamie" STRONG is buried in the old Odd Fellows (now city) cemetery on the SE side of Rock Falls, Whiteside, IL beside her 3rd husband, Samuel E. LOWRY - under the name of Mary "Mamie" LOWRY.

Gravesite Details

The new memorial stone lists Mary A STRONG as born 1839-1917, but it appears that the correct dates are 1840-1918. See this newspaper clipping from 27 Dec 1918 Dixon Evening Telegraph. Burial arrangements by her son, Charles STRONG of Sterling IL.
