BAKER, HARLEY NATHAN, Grand Rapids, Michigan, was born in Battle Creek, Michigan, June 19, 1864, son of Nathan C. and Carrie (Crocker) Baker. He attended the common schools of Iowa, was graduated from the high school at Independence, Iowa, and continued his studies in Upper University, Fayette, Iowa. His medical preceptor was D. P. Shattuck, M. D., of Independence, Iowa, and he studied for his profession in the National Homœopathic College of Chicago, in 1891-2, and Hering Medical College, Chicago, from 1892 until 1894, being graduated with the degree of M. D. He practiced in Hart, Michigan, 1894-1896 ; Chicago, Illinois, 1896-1897 ; Spring Lake, Michigan, 1898-1904, and in Grand Rapids since 1904. He was health officer in Hart, Michigan, in 1895, and in Spring Lake, Michigan, from 1899-1904, and medical examiner for the Metropolitan and Union Central Life Insurance companies at Spring Lake, his appointment holding good in Grand Rapids. Dr. Baker is a member of the Michigan Homœopathic Medical Society, the American Institute of Homœopathy, the Homœopathic Medical Society of Western Michigan, of which he is vice-president, and the Masonic and Knights of Pythias fraternities. He married Nettie B. Hodges, June 16, 1896, and they have one daughter, Dorothea Baker.

Baker, Harley N. M.D. of Hart, is a native of the Wolverine State, having been born in Battle Creek June 19, 1865. He is a son of Nathan C. and Carrie J. Baker. At the age of five his parents disposed of their Battle Creek interests and went West, spending some three years in rosecting, visiting various points in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa, finally settling in Independence Iowa. In that city and on the farm near by, the doctor spent his younger days, meanwhile attending the Independence schools. In 1879-1890 he attended school in La Crosse, Wisconsin and the next two years at the Upper Iowa University of Fayette, Ia., following with a year's course in 1883 in the State Agricultural College at Ames. The two years following, he read law in the office of Hon. E. E. Hasmer of Independence, when, owing to throat difficulties, he went to the Pacific Coast, where he spent the years 1886-87. Returning to Independence after a short engagement in the agricultural implement business he began the study of medicine under the tutorship of Dr. D. P. Shattuck. Here he remained until Oct. 1892, meanwhile, in 1889-90, taking his first course of medical lectures in Chicago. In the fall of 1892 he located in Chicago, practicing and continuing the study of his chosen profession under the preceptorship of Howard Crutcher, M.D. and at Hering Medical College and Hospital, from which place of learning he graduated in April 1894. After a prospecting tour through the West and the South, he located in Hart in the following practice. The doctor makes a specialty of chronic diseases in which he is most successful. He is at present health officer of the village of Hart and a prominent member of the Maccabee Order, of which he is medical examiner.
