Brian Francis Wedlake, 20, of 28 Garret Place, Midland Park, NJ, was killed in action on Thursday, May 2, 1968, as a result of a gunshot wound to the body during an engagement against hostile forces in the vicinity of Dai Do and 4 kilometers north northeast of the Dong Ha Airfield. He was born and raised in Jersey City before moving to Midland Park in 1954. Brian was a 1966 graduate of Midland Park High School where he earned letters in track, football and basketball. He was an all-star for both the Little League and Babe Ruth League baseball teams. Brian enlisted in the Marines in August 1967. He arrived in Vietnam on Monday, 4 March 1968 and was assigned to Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. Beloved son of William Henry Jr. and Frances Lagoria (nee Chapman) Wedlake of Midland Park. Dear brother of William Wedlake at home and Barbara Wedlake, a student at Nazareth College in Kentucky. Loving grandson of Edna (nee Higgins) and the late William Harold Wedlake Sr. of Jersey City and the late James Joseph and Mary Cecelia (nee Keogh) Chapman. Visitation was offered on Sunday, May 19, 1968 and Monday, May 20, 1968 from 3-5 and 7-9 PM at the Jacob Henry Olthuis & Son Funeral Home, 159 Godwin Avenue, Midland Park, NJ 07432. The funeral services were arranged in the funeral home on Tuesday, May 21,1968 at 9:30 AM followed by a high requiem mass conducted at 10 AM in Church of the Nativity, 315 Prospect Street, Midland Park, NJ 07432. Interment followed at Maryrest Cemetery.
