DOROTHY RUTH SORAH WAS THE DAUGHTER OF STEWART ROBERT AND HAZEL UNKNOWN SORAH. SHE MARRIED HERMAN BUFORD THURMAN ON 13 NOV 1947 IN HAWKINS COUNTY, TENNESSEE. GOD BLESSED THIS MARRIAGE WITH THREE CHILDREN: DANNY L, JAMES STEWART AND SHARON GAYE.

SURGOINSVILLE - Dorothy Ruth Thurman, 76, of Surgoinsville, passed away Friday, August 18, 2006, after an extended illness. Her life centered on her church and family. She was a faithful member of Surgoinsville First United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Herman B. Thurman and her parents, Robert and Hazel Sorah.

Surviving are three children, Danny Thurman and wife Martha Kaye of Surgoinsville, Stewart and wife Jeri of Tallahassee, FL, Sharon Seymore and husband John of Surgoinsville; five grandchildren, Mary Thurman, Marietta, GA, Robert Thurman and wife, Katie, Knoxville, TN, Adam Seymore and wife Amy, Knoxville, TN, Kristina and Amber Thurman, Tallahassee, FL.

She also left behind seven brothers and sisters, Katherine Starnes and husband O.B., Fall Branch, Evelyn Tate, Surgoinsville, Leroy Sorah and wife Mary, Surgoinsville, Ronald Sorah and wife Margaret, Calhoun, TN, Denny Sorah, the Philippines, Carolyn Neal, Alexandria, VA, Larry Sorah and wife Kay, Athens, TN. She was survived by many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Monday, August 21, 2006 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Surgoinsville First United Methodist Church. Services will be held 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Cynthia Thompson and Rev. Scott Layer officiating. The family will receive friends anytime at her residence.

Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Cemetery. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family wishes to extend their thanks to the caring staff of Wellmont Hospice and especially to Frankie Yankee.

Memorial contributions may be made to Surgoinsville First United Methodist Church, 621 Old Stage Rd., Surgoinsville, TN 37873. Christian-Sells Funeral Home in Rogersville is serving the Thurman family.
