JAMES "JIMMY" NEIL THURMAN WAS THE SON OF WILLIAM JAMES AND MARY JULIA SIMMONS THURMAN. HE MARRIED MARY ELIZABETH WOLFE ON 19 OCT 1946 IN SCOTT COUNTY, VIRGINIA. GOD BLESSED THIS MARRIAGE WITH THREE CHILDREN: PHILLIP WAYNE, CAROLYN MARIE AND SHIRLEY FAYE.

SURGOINSVILLE – James Neil Thurman, 89, of Surgoinsville went home to be with his heavenly father and join his beloved wife of 62 years on Saturday, February 19, 2011, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He was a member of Surgoinsville First United Methodist Church. He served as Trustee and former chairman of the Parsonage Committee. He was the last surviving member of the Church Building Committee. He retired from Eastman as a Supervisor in the Acid Division after 39 years of service. He was a charter member of Clay Lodge #386 F&AM, having received his 50 year service award in January 2001. He served on the Hawkins County Election Commission. He served in the Army Air Corp WWII Asiatic/Pacific Theater. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Elizabeth Thurman in 2009; father, W. J. Thurman; mother, Mary J. Thurman; brother, Herman Thurman.

He is survived by his son, Wayne Thurman and wife Mary Nancy; daughters, Carolyn Caldwell and husband Vernon, Shirley Gillespie and husband Jack; grandchildren, Karen Smith and husband Glenn, Justin Gillespie and wife Holly, Marcella Ayers and husband David; great-grandchildren, Timothy Neil Smith and Jacob Elijah Gillespie; brothers, Carroll Thurman and wife Margaret, Bill Thurman and wife Betty; several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Surgoinsville Methodist Church, Maintenance Fund, P O Box 134, Surgoinsville, TN 37873.

The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at Surgoinsville United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Seay and the Rev. Randy Lantz. Hawkins County Color Guard and Tennessee Army National Guard will conduct military graveside services 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 23, 2011, in Highland Cemetery.
