Raymond L. Blubaugh, 73, died, following an illness, at 6:24 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, in the emergency room of St. Joseph's Hospital of Marshall County. He and his family had lived for 45 years at 206 Baker Street, Plymouth, Ind.

Ray had been a resident of Plymouth almost all of his life. Shortly after his birth on Aug. 3, 1924, in Gary, Ind., his family moved to Marshall County and made their home in the house that is now the newly-renovated "Irish Inn" on old U.S. 31. His parents, both deceased, were Louis and Lucille Loeffler Blubaugh.

A graduate of St. Michael's Academy, Ray was a member of the 1942 graduating class of Lincoln High School in Plymouth.
Ray defended our country with honor and distinction. A United States Army veteran, he served in World War II in the European Theater as a Private First Class, Company B, 422nd Infantry. In 1944, in Italy, Ray was awarded The Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Clusters. That same year he earned another Purple Heart with Clusters for battle in France. He was also awarded five Bronze Stars with arrowheads and the Distinguished Bronze Star. In his company, only two members survived the War.

On June 29, 1947, Ray and Jean Calhoun were married in Plymouth. They celebrated their Golden Anniversary this past summer.
In 1980, he retired from the Plymouth Postal Department as a rural letter carrier after 34 years of dedicated service. Ray was notified on Jan. 8, 1998, that he was one of three surviving members of the 1951 postal employees who were with the department when they moved to their expansion facility on Garro Street. For many years he also owned and operated the Marshall County Fire Equipment Company.

In his early years he was a journalist: he worked for the Tipton Tribune, Tipton, Ind., as a sports writer.
He loved sports. He was a Little League coach in Plymouth. He enjoyed following his beloved St. Louis Cardinals and Notre Dame football.

His four grandchildren, Jennifer, Danielle, Kelsey and Jeremy Blubaugh, all of Plymouth, were the lights of his life, and he supported their efforts, following all of their activities.
Ray was a member of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Plymouth. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1162 and he belonged to the Plymouth Moose Lodge #741. Through the years, he was in various other service groups in the community.

He is survived by his beloved wife Jean and their two sons and daughters-in-law: Michael R. and Sharon Blubaugh and Mark A. and Darlene Blubaugh, all of Plymouth.

In addition to his grandchildren, Ray is also survived by a half sister, Myrna K. Hron of Kewasham, Wis.

A brother, Robert Blubaugh, and his parents preceded Ray in death.

Services entrusted to Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home.
