Homer William Banks was the grandson of Sgt. William Bryson Banks (1821-1910), who fought in the Civil War.
William Bryson Banks, son of Andrew Banks (1797-1857), was 1/4 Cherokee Indian. Andrew's father, John Banks Jr. (1750-1812), was married to Mourning Dove, a full blood Cherokee, in Cherokee, Tennessee.
The Banks family has lived in Yancey County for five generations and in North Carolina for seven. The earliest known settler in America, was John Banks Sr. born 1730 in Virginia and died 1790 in Pamlico, North Carolina. Some believe he was born in England but no source has been found.
