Ed Jasnoch
Edwin "Ed" Joe Jasnoch, age 85 of Oshkosh, passed away on Monday, February 14, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family.
Ed was born October 13, 1925 at Boelus, Nebraska the son of Joseph F. and Matilda (Cours) Jasnoch. He grew up in Ogallala and graduated from the Ogallala High School. On March 9, 1944 Ed enlisted in the United States Army. He went from being a nineteen year old farmer to the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was assigned as a waist gunner on a B-17 flying out of England in the European Theater of Operations. He moved up to the rank of Sergeant and the position of bombardier and nose gunner. Ed flew numerous missions over Germany. After Germanyfs surrender he was preparing to fly on a B-29 in the Pacific until the time the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. The soldier/farmer returned to Nebraska with the signing of the Japanese surrender. The only Pacific flights Edfs crew made were to ferry dignitaries to the surrender ceremonies.
Ed married Joan Ingram on May 2, 1950 at St. Lukefs Catholic Church in Ogallala. Ed loved farming and ranching. Even in the last weeks of his life while on a ride he would comment on what cattle belonged to whom. His hobbies included playing pitch, pitching horse shoes, fishing and gardening. He enjoyed watching football and bull riding and attending his grandchildrenfs sporting events in high school and college. He was a member of St. Elizabethfs Catholic Church , the Eagles Club in Oshkosh and the Elks Lodge in Ogallala. He was well known to family and friends for his tremendous sense of humor.
