WELLINGTON - Dr. Carter Holcomb, 77, died Friday, Jan. 8, 1998. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. James McLeod, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in North Fairview Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home. Dr. Holcomb was born in Wellington and graduated from Wellington High School in 1937. He did his pre-med studies at the University of Texas at Austin and graduated from the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1952. He served with the Army during World War II in the 104th Infantry Division, 329th Medical Battalion. He received a battlefield commission as first lieutenant and was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. Dr. Holcomb returned to Wellington in 1953 and was in private family practice until 1991. He delivered about 3000 babies, the last being his granddaughter in 1981. He was a member of the Texas Medical Association, the American Medical Association and the Texas Academy of Family Physicians. He was a former member of the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. He also was a former district chairman of the Boy Scouts. Dr. Holcomb married Wanda Birden in 1965 at Wellington. She died in 1992.Survivors include a daughter, Janet Noto of Wellington; four sons, Steven Holcomb of Virginia, and Stan Holcomb, Mark Holcomb and David Holcomb, all of Oregon; a stepdaughter, Linda Towery of Illinois; three brothers, H.A. Holcomb and Dysart Holcomb, both of Amarillo, and Sam Holcomb of California; a sister, Dorothy Johnson of California; and a granddaughter.The family requests memorials be to the Magnolia Speech School in Jackson, Miss.
